Health cover for international students

All You Need to Know About OSHC

Overseas Student Health Cover helps international students manage medical and hospital costs while studying in Australia. For most Student visa holders, maintaining suitable OSHC is also a visa requirement.

Important: Your cover should begin when you arrive in Australia and remain current for your required stay.

The essentials

What is OSHC?

OSHC is health insurance designed for overseas students and their eligible dependants in Australia. It is separate from travel insurance and, for most international students, it is the main way to receive help with eligible healthcare costs.

01

A visa requirement

Most Student visa applicants and accompanying family members must hold approved OSHC for the required period, unless an exception applies.

02

Cover the right dates

If you travel before your course begins, your policy should start on your arrival date—not simply the first day of classes.

03

Include your family

Your spouse or partner and dependent children travelling on your application generally need to be included in suitable couple or family cover.

Basic OSHC

What is usually covered?

Benefits and limits differ by insurer and policy, but minimum OSHC generally assists with:

  • Appointments with a general practitioner (GP)
  • Eligible specialist medical services
  • Some public and private hospital treatment
  • Eligible surgery, blood tests and X-rays
  • Emergency ambulance transport
  • Limited benefits for prescription medicines

Check before treatment

What may not be covered?

Basic OSHC does not cover every health expense. Common exclusions or additional costs can include:

  • Dental check-ups and treatment
  • Glasses, contact lenses and routine optical care
  • Physiotherapy and other extras services
  • Some medicines above policy limits
  • Services received during a waiting period
  • Gap fees when a provider charges above the covered benefit

Tip: Optional extras cover may be available if you want benefits for dental, optical, physiotherapy or other services.

Understanding costs

Cover does not always mean no cost

Your insurer pays benefits according to your policy. If a doctor, specialist, hospital or pharmacy charges more than the benefit, you may need to pay the difference. This is called a gap fee or out-of-pocket cost.

Ask about fees before treatment and look for providers in your insurer’s direct-billing network. Direct billing may reduce what you pay at the appointment, although gaps can still apply.

Before booking healthcare

Check your policy benefits, waiting periods, provider network and expected out-of-pocket cost. For planned hospital or specialist treatment, contact your insurer first.

How to choose an OSHC policy

  1. Confirm the dates your visa application requires.
  2. Select single, couple, single-parent or family cover as appropriate.
  3. Compare price, benefits, exclusions, waiting periods and medicine limits.
  4. Check direct-billing doctors, hospital agreements, claims support and member apps.
  5. Consider extras only if they suit your needs and budget.

After purchasing cover

How to use your OSHC

1

Save your details

Keep your policy number, membership card, insurer app and emergency contact details easy to access.

2

Find a provider

Search your insurer’s network and ask whether the clinic offers direct billing for your policy.

3

Confirm the cost

Ask what the service costs, what benefit may be paid and whether you will have a gap fee.

4

Keep your receipts

If you pay first, retain itemised invoices and receipts so you can submit an eligible claim.

Common questions

OSHC FAQs

Policy details vary, so always read the insurer’s current product information before purchasing.

Most Student visa holders must maintain approved OSHC for the required period. Limited exceptions may apply to students covered under specific arrangements, so check the current Department of Home Affairs requirements for your circumstances.

Your accompanying partner and dependent children generally need to be included in appropriate couple, single-parent or family OSHC. Check that every person included in your visa application has suitable cover.

No. Medicare is Australia’s public health system. Some students may have limited Medicare access through a reciprocal healthcare agreement, but that does not automatically remove the OSHC requirement.

Generally, no. Travel insurance may provide useful additional protection, but it is not normally a substitute for approved OSHC when OSHC is required for your Student visa.

You may be able to change providers, but you must avoid any gap in cover. Before switching, confirm transfer arrangements, waiting periods, refunds and the exact start and end dates with both insurers.
